The Emirates ID is the document that actually runs your life in the UAE. The residence visa gives you the right to be here; the Emirates ID is what a bank, a landlord, a telecom operator and a hospital will ask for.
It is issued by ICP and it comes at the end of the residency sequence rather than alongside it, which is the part that surprises people planning a move.
Where it sits in the sequence
- Company licensed, and the establishment card issued.
- Entry permit issued, or a status change if you are already in the country.
- Medical fitness test at an approved centre.
- Emirates ID application and biometrics.
- Residence visa issued, and the Emirates ID card produced and collected.
What the biometrics appointment involves
Fingerprints, a photograph and a signature, taken at an ICP service centre or an approved typing centre. It is short. What makes it go wrong is arriving with a name spelled differently from the passport, or with documents whose details do not match the application.
Name consistency across passport, visa application and Emirates ID matters more than it sounds. A middle name present on one document and absent on another produces a mismatch that is far easier to prevent than to correct.
How long it takes and what it costs
Days rather than weeks, once the medical is done, though production and delivery add time. The ICP fee depends on the duration of the card, which tracks your visa. Our part is included in the AED 300 portal access and AED 200 typing fees that cover the residency sequence; the ICP charge itself is billed at cost. The cost calculator totals our side for any number of people.
Renewal, and the gap nobody plans for
The Emirates ID expires with the visa and renews with it. The gap that catches people is between expiry and the new card arriving: during it, some services will not transact. If you have a tenancy renewal, a bank process or a school registration in that window, move it or start the renewal earlier.
For a company with staff, several of these cycles run at once on different dates. Employment visas for your first hires covers how those clocks stack up, and our PRO service exists mostly to keep them from colliding.
Losing it, or changing your details
- Lost or damaged: a replacement is applied for through ICP, and you should report it rather than simply reapply.
- Change of employer or company: a new card follows the new visa. It is not transferred.
- Change of name or passport: the ID has to be updated, and the mismatch will surface at the least convenient moment if it is not.
Emirates ID questions
After the medical and biometrics, at the end of the residency sequence. It is not issued with the entry permit and it is not available before you arrive. The investor visa covers the steps that come before it.
Yes, for the medical fitness test and for the biometrics. Those two steps are why the residency process has a physical section in the middle of it.
It tracks your residence visa, so the duration follows whatever your visa carries. Golden visa holders get a correspondingly longer card.
Fix it before the application rather than after. A mismatch between passport, visa and Emirates ID is straightforward to prevent and slow to correct, and it tends to surface at a bank counter.
There is a window where some services will not transact. Start the renewal early if you have a tenancy, a bank process or a school registration falling in it.
Some services accept the application receipt or a digital identity, and some do not. Assume the important one will not, and plan the timing accordingly.
