The golden visa is a ten-year renewable residence permit that does not need a sponsor, and for business owners there are four separate routes into it. They have almost nothing in common except the outcome, and people routinely apply on the wrong one.
The thresholds below are from the UAE government portal and the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship. They are the conditions as published, not a consultancy's summary of them. If you have not set the company up yet, starting a business in Dubai as a foreigner covers the sequence that comes first.
The four business routes
| Route | What it takes | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Financial deposit | AED 2,000,000 deposited with a UAE bank, frozen for at least two years and not withdrawable during the residency. Local sukuk or investment bonds count. | 10 years |
| Company owner | A valid commercial or industrial licence and a memorandum of association showing capital of at least AED 2,000,000, plus a Federal Tax Authority letter confirming annual tax of at least AED 250,000. | 10 years |
| Public investment | At least AED 10,000,000 invested in total, with at least 60% of it outside real estate. | 10 years |
| Entrepreneur | A certified auditor's letter putting the project value at no less than AED 500,000, and a letter from a competent authority or approved incubator confirming the project is innovative and technological or future-oriented. | 10 years |
There is also a property route: AED 2,000,000 or more in real estate gets five years rather than ten, renewable on the same terms.
The condition most owners fail
This is why the entrepreneur route exists and why it is often the more realistic one for a founder. AED 500,000 of audited project value against AED 2,000,000 of capital is a different order of requirement, and the trade is that somebody official has to certify the project is genuinely innovative.
What the visa actually gets you
- Residence for five or ten years, renewable, without a UAE sponsor
- The ability to stay outside the UAE for longer than the usual six months without the residency lapsing
- Sponsorship of family, including spouse and children
- No tie between your residency and any single employer or company
That third point is the one people underrate. A standard residence visa is issued through a company; if the company closes, the visa follows it. A golden visa does not.
What it does not get you
It is not citizenship, it is not a tax status, and it does not remove any corporate obligation. A golden visa holder who owns a UAE company still registers that company for corporate tax and still files a return — see the corporate tax filing deadline. The residency and the company are separate files with separate rules.
The order to do this in
- Set the company up properly first, if the company is the route. Capital in the memorandum has to be real and documented, and amending an MoA afterwards is slower than getting it right.
- Get the auditor or the tax letter before you apply, not during. Applications stall on missing third-party letters more than on anything the applicant controls.
- Check which authority handles your emirate. ICP and the Dubai residency authority both issue, and the route determines which.
- Budget for the medical, Emirates ID and issuance steps. They are the same steps as any residence visa and they are not included in any threshold above.
If the company itself is not set up yet, that comes first and it is a different exercise. Mainland business setup and the free zone comparison cover the two routes, and the cost calculator prices ours.
Golden visa questions from business owners
Only on the deposit route, and it has to sit frozen with a UAE bank for at least two years and stay there for the residency. The company route wants AED 2,000,000 of capital in the memorandum plus an FTA letter on tax paid, which is a different test entirely.
On the company-owner route the Federal Tax Authority confirms the owner or partner pays annual tax of no less than AED 250,000. It is the condition that filters this route, and it is why many owners who meet the capital requirement still do not qualify.
Lower on money and higher on proof. AED 500,000 of project value certified by an auditor, plus a letter from a competent authority or approved incubator confirming the project is innovative and technological or future-oriented. If your business is a trading company, that letter is the obstacle.
No. Residency status and tax status are separate. Your company's corporate tax obligations are unchanged, and personal tax residency has its own tests.
Yes. Spouse and children can be sponsored, and the family's residency is tied to yours rather than to an employer.
A golden visa is not cancelled by an extended absence in the way a standard residence visa is after six months. That flexibility is one of the main practical reasons owners pursue it.
